Godzilla x Kong Ruled the Box Office, and Monkey Man followed the Second

Warner Bros. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire retained first the position in its second-week run and added $31.7 million from 3948 theatres. In second place, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man’s ticket sale is estimated at $10 from 3029 theatres. Disney and 20th-Century Fox’s film The First Omen stands at the 4th position. It collected $8.4 million from 3375 theatres. Kungu Fu Panda 4 and Ghostbusters Frozen Empire remained steady in the box office competition.

Godzilla x Kong comes under Legendary Pictures, directed by Adam Wingard. It tells the story of the partnership between Godzilla and Kong. the monstrous Skar King came from the Hollow Earth, and Kong has to make Godzilla stand beside him to prevent the complete devastation of the world.

The film became a massive success in its opening weeks, but the movie is in the second position in the box office records this year. Dune: Part Two is the highest-grossing film of 2024, which earned $660 million at the box office. The ticket sales of Godzilla x Kong dropped by 60% in the second week, and it earned domestically $132 million and $361 million globally.

The directorial debut of Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, which is produced by Jordan Peel and Jomon Thomas, tells the story of a young man, who is working as a monkey-masked fighter in a fight club. He plans to take revenge on a group who were responsible for the death of his mother.

The First Omen is a prequel film of The Omen(1976), which was directed by Arkasha Stevenson. It stars Nell Tiger as Margaret Daino, who is sent to Rome to work at the Orphanage, there is the birth of an antichrist creates a conspiracy, which leads her to doubt her faith.

Monkey Man and The First Omen were intended for streaming and initially not decided for big screen release. Monkey Man was decided to be released on Netflix, but after Jordan Peele saw the film and felt that it needed a theatrical release,  and so Universal Pictures took the right for $10 million.

The First Omen decided to stream on Hulu, but the horror elements led to a theatrical draw, which will bring more financial benefit to the studio. So they decide on a theatre release. 

The third place on the box chart is held up by “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, it added $9 million from 3835 theatres. This supernatural comedy film earned in the domestic theatres $88 million and $138 million in the world box office. The production cost of the film was $100 million.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” stands up the fifth place in the chart. It earned $166 million in the domestic and $410 million globally. The production budget of Kungu Fanda 4 is $85 million, and it is well performed in the theatre.
