How to plan for a spring clean

Stepping into a new year offers the perfect opportunity to tackle all of the clutter and cleaning that has built up in the weeks and months leading up to the festive period.

Lots of people have been fortunate enough to spend time in their homes with friends and family, and with this, comes a lack of structure and routine. This means your normal cleaning and tidying habits may have gone out of the window.

Embarking on a spring clean in your home will not only help to make your living space that much more appealing, but it will also have huge positive effects on your mental health.

Fitted furniture experts Hammonds conducted a recent survey to get a better understanding of the nation’s cleaning habits, and they found that despite almost one in five cleaning out their homes once a month, the average Brit hoards £173.42 worth of unworn clothes in their wardrobe.

If you are in need of some inspiration for ways to get the ball rolling with your spring cleaning, take a look at some of the handy tips below:

Set aside time

Most people tend to opt to tackle all of their spring cleaning in one go, but more often than not this ends up being too much of an ambitious task, and it could result in you abandoning the plans altogether.

You could instead spread out the tasks over the space of a few weeks, setting aside 15-30 minutes a couple of times a week on evenings or over the weekend to tackle smaller jobs which will be much more manageable.

Tackle each room individually

Similarly, it makes more sense to do your spring cleaning room by room, so you can fully concentrate on that area of the house as it’s very easy to get sidetracked.

You could deep clean your kitchen or bathroom, or spend an afternoon going through your clothes in your bedroom to figure out if there are any items you no longer need that you could donate to charity or sell online.

Benefits of cleaning

There are so many benefits to having a spring clean. As per the survey by furniture specialist Hammonds, having a good clear-out is well known to have huge positive effects on your mental and physical health. Knowing where to find things like clothing avoids frustration when you are in a rush and helps time management, as well as cuts visual noise from clutter and makes cleaning so much faster and easier.
