Elizabeth Holmes Scheduled to Transfer to Texas Halfway House in August 2027

Ex-Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is scheduled to be transferred from federal prison to a halfway house in August 2027, according to recent reports citing federal Bureau of Prisons scheduling. Holmes will reportedly be transferred to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, to serve out her 11-year sentence for fraud.

She reported to the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, on May 30, 2023, to begin serving her sentence. The Federal Bureau of Prisons updated her projected full release date to December 2032 in July 2023, based on standard good conduct time credits allowed under the First Step Act. The 2027 halfway house transfer does not change the total length of her sentence but does change where and under what conditions she spends the final months.

ABC News reports Holmes is expected to be placed in the Austin Transitional Center in August 2027. People magazine confirmed the transfer and said victims of the Theranos fraud were notified of the impending location change.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not issued a public statement about the transfer, because inmate reclassification and RRC placements are routine administrative actions that generally do not warrant separate press releases. But the BOP’s public inmate locator system reflects ongoing changes to her custody status through the 2027 date.

This is good news for those following high-profile white-collar crime cases, but it is neither an early pardon nor an extraordinary release. Transfers to Residential Reentry Centers are a routine and legally mandated part of the federal corrections system, especially for inmates nearing the end of their sentences.

The First Step Act of 2018 increased the opportunities for these programs, which aim to reduce recidivism by giving inmates a chance to find jobs and housing before their formal release into supervised release. For Holmes, this means a gradual transition from a low-security prison camp to a structured community environment, rather than an abrupt reentry into life on the outside.

Holmes will serve time at the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, until the transfer date in August 2027. When she arrives at the Austin Transitional Center, she will have to abide by the rules of the facility, which may include curfews, drug testing, and participation in reentry programming.

Holmes, who served the halfway house program, is expected to transition to home confinement or standard supervised release for the remainder of her sentence, pending final approval from the Federal Bureau of Prisons and her assigned probation officer.
