I’m always fascinated by the personal lives of famous couples. So when I heard that longtime partners Chynna Phillips Baldwin and Billy Baldwin had decided to live in separate homes, I knew I had to investigate further. What I uncovered was an inspiring story of two people who have found an unconventional but deeply fulfilling way to nurture their nearly 30-year marriage.
In a recent YouTube video, Chynna Phillips Baldwin disclosed that she and her husband have been living in different cities in California, with Chynna residing in Santa Barbara and Billy in Beverly Hills. “Basically, it’s totally unstructured… let me explain,” the Wilson Phillips singer told the camera.
Chynna went on to share that the idea was her own. “I suggested to Billy, ‘Why don’t we conduct a brief experiment to experience what it’s like to have me in Santa Barbara and you in Beverly Hills, and then we switch back and forth?'” In between, the couple makes time for “date nights together; we have therapy; we have dinner with the children; and we go to the beach or the museum.”
During a FaceTime call with her husband, Chynna further elaborated on their unique living arrangement. “I think that we’re onto something,” she told Billy. “I genuinely believe it, as we derive pleasure from each other’s companionship.” It’s so hard to articulate to people that we’re madly in love, we really enjoy being around one another, we cherish our marriage, and we dWe simply require a brief period of separation due to our slight aversion to each other. of allergic tI’m sure many different couples are allergic to one another.are allergic to each other.”
Billy replied that Chynna has the “allergy” to his “certain energy.” As he put it, “You do things that, you know, sort of alter my energy sometimes.” The couple, who share three adult children, have been open about the ups and downs of their marriage in the past. In a previous video, they revealed that they had separated for six months before reconciling through honest communication. Chynna also admitted that her deep Christian faith had created some tension in their relationship.
“The Christianity aspect has been a glaring issue for a while, as [religion] has overtaken my life in many ways.” It has perhaps even made you question whether you and I can really make it in the long run,” she told Billy.
It’s clear that for Chynna and Billy, unconventional doesn’t have to mean unhealthy. By embracing their “allergies to one another” and finding creative ways to nurture their partnership, this inspiring couple has demonstrated that true love can thrive even when the living situation isn’t traditional. As Chynna said, “We just need a little time apart… And it’s OK. I’m sure many different couples are allergic to one another.
