Duncan Sheik, ‘Barely Breathing’ Singer and ‘Spring Awakening’ Composer, Dies at 56

Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter behind the 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” and the Tony Award-winning composer of the Broadway musical “Spring Awakening,” died Thursday at a Manhattan hospital, his manager said. He was fifty-six years old.

Duncan Sheik passed away on September 17, 2026, at the age of 56, at a hospital in Manhattan due to organ failure. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning composer best known for “Barely Breathing” and the Broadway musical “Spring Awakening” died surrounded by family, according to a statement posted to his Instagram account on Sept. 18, 2026.

Duncan Sheik died Thursday night at a Manhattan hospital, his mother, Suzanne Sheik, told The New York Times. The cause of death was organ failure.

The family of Sheik posted an update to his official Instagram account the day before, saying he was in “critical but stable condition,” but did not disclose the nature of his medical condition.

His family said in a statement Friday, Sept. 18, that he died “with profound sadness.”

“Duncan has passed away last night, loved by many,” read the Instagram post.

Duncan Scott Sheik was born November 18, 196,9 in Montclair, New Jersey. He studied semiotics at Brown University, where he played in a band with future musician Lisa Loeb.

Sheik’s recording career began in 1996 with the self-titled debut album. His hit single “Barely Breathing” spent 55 weeks in the Top 40 and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Sheik’s subsequent albums, including “Humming” (1998), “Phantom Moon” (2001), “Daylight” (2002) and “White Limousine” (2006), never again achieved the same chart heights as “Barely Breathing,” his signature pop hit.

Sheik eventually turned to theater writing, collaborating with lyricist and playwright Steven Sater on the rock musical “Spring Awakening,” adapted from a play about teens dealing with sexuality and repression by German playwright Frank Wedekind, which debuted in 1891.

The production premiered on Broadway in 2006 and was a critical and commercial success. “Spring Awakening” won eight Tonys, including best musical, at the 2007 Tony Awards. And Sheik himself won two Tonys for best original score and best orchestrations.

In 2008, Sheik won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album for his cast recording of “Spring Awakening.” The original cast included future stars Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, and John Gallagher Jr.

Sheik continued to write for the stage after Spring Awakening. His credits include:

• “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”
• “American Psycho” (2013), a musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ horror novel
• “Because of Winn-Dixie” (2013), “Whisper House”

His most recent studio album, “Claptrap,” came out in 2022.

The family’s Instagram statement described Sheik as a “singular talent” and “deeply influential voice in music and theater.”

“The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater,” the statement read, citing his Grammy nomination for “Barely Breathing” and his Tony- and Grammy Award-winning work on “Spring Awakening.”

The statement also paid tribute to Sheik as a family man, describing him as a father, husband, son, brother and friend. And it thanked fans, friends, and collaborators for the “outpouring of love.”

The New York Times also quoted the composer’s mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirming her son’s death, with organ failure as the cause.

The musical’s frank treatment of teenage sex, repression, and coming-of-age themes struck a chord with audiences and critics and helped revive interest in original Broadway musicals in the mid-2000s.

Sheik proved an artist of impressive range, writing intimate pop songs as well as large-scale theatrical scores. “Spring Awakening” is still performed in theaters around the world, and “Barely Breathing” is still getting pop radio play in the 1990s.

He is survived by his wife Nora Ariffin and their 7-year-old daughter, Ines.

The family has not announced any plans for a public memorial. The Instagram statement asked for privacy during this difficult time. “Spring Awakening” still has an active afterlife in regional and community theaters. Tony Award winner Danya Taymor is set to direct a new production scheduled to return in fall 2026 at Studio Seaview.
