Solar Movie in 2026: What Happened to It, Is It Safe, and Legal Alternatives
SolarMovie was a popular free movie site in the 2010s. The original site shut down in 2016, but the name lives on. If you search for it now, you’ll find many sites with the same name and layout. The new sites have no relation to the original.
This guide will explain the history of SolarMovie, what the websites using the name have become, and what legal alternatives are available. I will also mention two sites that “SolarMovie alternatives” lists recommend, even though they have been closed for some time.

How the original SolarMovie worked
SolarMovie wasn’t a video file host. It worked as an index. For each movie or episode, SolarMovie listed different embed links for that media on other video hosting sites, and users chose and watched the media on that hosting site, usually in an embedded player. SolarMovie ran advertisements to make money.
This indexing system allowed SolarMovie to grow very quickly. There was no need to create an account or subscription, and the catalog had almost everything, including old movies and television episodes that aired the day before. In 2014, TorrentFreak called SolarMovie one of the biggest online streaming indexes, and estimated that it received over a million visitors each week.
In 2016, Australian film studios targeted SolarMovie. The site’s operator told TorrentFreak that he removed infringing content when notified, and that the site never hosted sex-related advertisements. The film studios and the courts in the UK and Australia agreed that SolarMovie was infringing.
What happened to SolarMovie: a timeline
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 🗓️ 2010 | Solarmovie.com was running. A US court filing later said an IP address tied to the alleged owner of KickassTorrents hosted Solarmovie.com from August 2010 to April 2011. |
| 🇬🇧 By 2014 | UK internet providers were already blocking the site under a court order. |
| 🔓 July 2014 | Someone got into the site’s account at the registrar name.com and transferred the Solarmovie.tl domain away. The stolen domain was pointed at a copy of the site on a different address. |
| 🇦🇺 February 2016 | Village Roadshow, backed by Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Columbia, Universal, and Warner Bros., asked an Australian court to make Telstra and 49 other providers block SolarMovie’s .ph, .is, .com, and .eu domains. |
| ⚠️ July 2016 | The US criminal complaint against Artem Vaulin, the alleged owner of KickassTorrents, named Solarmovie.ph and said it sat one IP address away from KAT’s servers. Days after KAT was shut down, SolarMovie went offline overnight. |
| 🚫 December 2016 | Australia’s Federal Court ordered local providers to block SolarMovie along with The Pirate Bay, Torrentz, and isoHunt. |
| 🔁 2017 onward | New sites began using the SolarMovie name on new domains. They come and go as domains get blocked or suspended. |
Nobody has confirmed who ran SolarMovie or why it closed. The timing, right after the KickassTorrents arrest and a court filing that named the site, suggests the operators decided to walk away before investigators came to them.
Is there an official SolarMovie website now?
No. Since 2016, there have been no official SolarMovie sites. The original site was not official like Netflix or Tubi. It was an unauthorized site with no company behind it that you could look up.
The sites using the name today are copies. Some reuse the old logo and design because people still search for the brand. Their domains change often, which is why there are multiple results when a search is conducted and why a link that worked last month may be dead or redirects to somewhere else. These domains are not listed in this guide for the reasons listed below.
Is SolarMovie safe to use?
The sites that have copied the SolarMovie name are not safe. Ad networks that mainstream advertisers avoid are what these sites rely on for their income. The risks come from the advertisements. This is what is typically experienced on these types of sites.
| Risk | What it looks like | Where it can lead |
|---|---|---|
| 🪟 Pop-ups and new tabs | Clicking play, or anywhere on the page, opens ad tabs | Scam pages, fake prize offers, fake virus alerts |
| ⬇️ Fake downloads | “Update your video player” or “Install HD codec” prompts | Adware or malware on your device |
| 💳 Fake sign-up walls | “Create a free account” forms that ask for a card number | Card fraud or recurring charges |
| 🔔 Notification traps | “Click Allow to confirm you’re not a robot” | A steady stream of spam alerts from your browser |
| 🕵️ Tracking | Many third-party scripts loading on every page | Your browsing data collected and sold |
| 📩 Provider notices | A copyright warning from your internet provider | Warnings, and in some countries, fines |
Revoke permission for unknown sites to give you notifications in your browser settings, remove any unnecessary browser extensions, run a malware scan, and contact your bank if you provided card details.
Is SolarMovie legal?
Illegal in almost every country to operate a site like SolarMovie because there are no licenses to post copyrighted movies and shows. The US complaint in the KickassTorrents case called out the original SolarMovie for this reason.
Whether or not simply observing is illegal varies by location. In the EU, the Court of Justice ruled in the Filmspeler case in 2017, stating that streaming from a known illegal source is considered copyright infringement. Elsewhere, the focus of enforcement is on the sites, and users typically are not pursued; however, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may send users warnings. Courts in the UK and Australia have ordered providers to block SolarMovie. If you want to know the rules where you are, you can consult your country’s copyright law, or contact a lawyer.
Two “alternatives” that no longer exist. Many SolarMovie articles still recommend Crackle and Amazon Freevee.
Crackle’s parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in July 2024. The company’s website was kept operational in the US. until June 2025, and it has since been taken offline. Apps using the Crackle name on app stores today are not the original service.
Amazon suspended Freevee in 2025. Free titles that were previously offered, such as Jury Duty and Bosch: Legacy, were moved to Prime Video and are available to all users in the US, UK, Germany, and Austria, with a “Watch for Free” label.
Best free legal alternatives to SolarMovie
These services pay for the rights to what they show. Most are free because they run ads, the same way broadcast TV does. None of them will have every new release, but they have a lot more than most people expect.
| Service | Run by | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 📺 Tubi | Fox Corporation | Free with ads | A deep on-demand movie catalog, closest to the SolarMovie browse-and-play feel |
| 📡 Pluto TV | Paramount | Free with ads | Hundreds of live channels that work like cable, plus on-demand titles |
| 🟣 The Roku Channel | Roku | Free with ads | Movies, TV shows, live channels, and Roku originals. Works on the web and on non-Roku devices. |
| 📦 Prime Video “Watch for Free” | Amazon | Free with ads and an Amazon account | Former Freevee shows and movies without a Prime membership |
| 🎞️ Plex | Plex | Free with ads | Free movies and live channels, in the same app you can use for your own media files |
| 📚 Kanopy | Kanopy | Free with a participating library or university card | Arthouse, classic, foreign, and documentary films, with no ads |
| 🏛️ Hoopla | Midwest Tape | Free with a participating library card | Movies and TV alongside ebooks, audiobooks, and comics |
| ▶️ YouTube | Free with ads | A rotating set of full-length free movies in its Movies & TV section |
Most of these services started in the US, and what you can watch changes by country. If one doesn’t open where you live, check its help page for the list of supported regions.
SolarMovie copycats vs. free legal services
| What matters | SolarMovie copycats | Free legal services |
|---|---|---|
| 💰 Price | ✅ Free | ✅ Free |
| 📜 Licensed content | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| 📢 Ads | ⚠️ Pop-ups, redirects, scam offers | ✅ Regular video ads |
| 🌐 Stable web address | ❌ Changes often | ✅ Yes |
| 📱 Smart TV and phone apps | ❌ Mostly browser only | ✅ Official apps |
| 🎟️ Films still in cinemas | ⚠️ Often poor-quality cam recordings | ❌ Rarely |
| 💬 Subtitles | ⚠️ Hit or miss | ✅ On many titles |
| 🎥 Pays the people who made it | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
The truth is, new releases are better on legal services. A copycat site might have a movie that was released last week. Legal services usually don’t have those. Copycat sites have poor quality recordings of movies made by patrons and are interspersed with ads. Digitally renting the movie for a couple of dollars is better than watching it on a copycat site.
How to pick a free streaming service
Think about what you watch the most. If you like having a large movie catalog, then you should try Tubi. If you like channel surfing, then Pluto TV is better. If you have a library card, then you should check if your library has either Kanopy or Hoopla, since they are ad-free and have movies that the other apps don’t have.
Check your devices. Almost all of the services in the table have official apps on phones and smart TVs. The ones SolarMovie has copies of don’t. Give a few a try. They are free to use, so there is nothing to cancel.
Frequently asked questions
What happened to SolarMovie?
The original SolarMovie went offline in July 2016 after the alleged owner of KickassTorrents was named in a US court filing. The operators never provided an reason. Before that, it had already been blocked in the UK and was subject to a blocking order in Australia.
Is SolarMovie still working?
Sites with the SolarMovie name have been copied and have not been the original site. Their addresses are always changing and the legal and security risks are the same as the original site.
Can SolarMovie give my phone or computer a virus?
The video itself is rarely the problem. The ads are. Fake “update your player” buttons, forced downloads, and notification prompts are the usual way people end up with adware or malware from these sites.

It depends on your country. In the EU, streaming from a source you know is unlicensed can count as infringement. Elsewhere, enforcement usually targets the sites, though internet providers may send warnings to users.

For most people, Tubi is the closest match because it lets you browse a large movie catalog and press play without paying. Pluto TV and The Roku Channel are good second options.
Is Crackle still available?
No. Crackle went offline after its parent company was liquidated. The trustee kept the US site running until June 2025. Apps currently using the Crackle name are not the original service.
Where did Amazon Freevee go?
Amazon closed the Freevee app in 2025 and moved its free content into Prime Video. Look for titles marked “Watch for Free” if you don’t have Prime.
