What Sources Said
Deadline first reported the casting as an exclusive in September 2026. The outlet noted that director Lucia Puenzo, whose directing debut XXY won the Grand Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week, was drawn to the project because of its nuanced portrayal of a teenager on the autism spectrum moving between two very different worlds.
Why It Matters
This project marks a notable professional reunion for Longoria and Derbez, who previously starred together in the 2018 romantic comedy Overboard. However, Marcelo in the Real World represents a significant departure from that genre, focusing on neurodivergent representation in mainstream cinema. The involvement of an acclaimed director like Puenzo signals a commitment to an authentic and sensitive portrayal of autism spectrum disorder.
